Fasting is one of the great acts of worship prescribed by Allah for His servants, offering numerous spiritual and physical benefits. Voluntary fasting is among the greatest deeds by which a Muslim can draw closer to Allah, and fasting on Mondays and Thursdays is particularly recommended.

The Importance of Voluntary Fasting

Fasting is not limited to the holy month of Ramadan; it extends to other days throughout the year when fasting is recommended, such as voluntary fasts. Fasting on Mondays and Thursdays holds a special virtue, as the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was keen on observing these fasts.

The Virtues of Fasting on Mondays and Thursdays

  1. Deeds are Presented to Allah:

It is narrated in a hadith from Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Deeds are presented on Mondays and Thursdays, and I like that my deeds be presented while I am fasting.” (Reported by al-Tirmidhi).

This hadith illustrates that deeds are presented to Allah on these days, and the fasting person is in a state of worship and closeness to Allah when his deeds are presented, increasing the likelihood of their acceptance and reward.

  2. Following the Example of the Prophet (peace be upon him):

It is a Sunnah (tradition) to follow the practices of the Prophet (peace be upon him) in his acts of worship, and among his practices was fasting on Mondays and Thursdays. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: “The Prophet (peace be upon him) was keen to fast on Mondays and Thursdays.” (Reported by Ibn Majah). Following the Prophet in this practice is a sign of love and true adherence to his teachings.

  3. Increasing Good Deeds:

Fasting is an act in which good deeds are multiplied, as it is an act of worship between the servant and his Lord, where the individual forsakes his desires for the sake of Allah. The reward for fasting is great, as Allah says in a Qudsi Hadith: “Every deed of the son of Adam is for him except fasting; it is for Me, and I shall reward for it.” (Reported by al-Bukhari).

  4. Expiation of Sins:

Fasting serves as an expiation for sins and misdeeds. Each day a believer fasts voluntarily seeking Allah’s pleasure becomes a means for erasing minor sins and wrongdoings.

  5. Achieving Physical Health:

Besides spiritual benefits, fasting offers numerous health advantages. It gives the digestive system a rest, boosts the immune system, and aids in detoxifying the body.
