Al-Attarin Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in Alexandria, and is considered one of the Islamic landmarks in the city. It is located in the street that bears its name,Al-Attarin District.
It was known by this name because it was located near the Attarin Market, one of the most famous markets in ancient Alexandria. This mosque was also known as the Al-Jayoushi Mosque in relation to the Emir of Al-Juyoushi Badr Al-Din Al-Jamali, who renovated, developed and expanded it in 477 AH / 1084 AD, while the mosque was built for the first time in 370 AD as a church in the name of St. Athananios, one of the symbols of the Coptic Orthodox Church.
