Al-Qayyum (The Names of Allah)

Al-Qayyum: One of Allah’s Beautiful Names, Al-Qayyum signifies “The Self-Sustaining, Eternal One,” embodying His absolute continuity in action and attributes, as well as His vigilant oversight over all beings and their deeds. This name points to the perfect independence and completeness of Allah’s power, His governance, and His unceasing care over creation.  

In the Quran

The name Al-Matin (The Firm) is mentioned in the Quran only once, as follows:

  • Surah Adh-Dhariyat (51:58):
    • “Indeed, Allah is the Provider, the Firm and Strong.”

Scholars’ Opinions on Its Meaning

  1. Al-Tabari: He explains that “Al-Matin” means “the one who is extremely powerful,” indicating Allah’s unmatched strength.

  2. Abu Ishaq Al-Zajjaj: He defines “Al-Matin” as “the one whose power and ability are unparalleled.”

  3. Al-Khattabi: He states that “Al-Matin” refers to “the one whose strength is unending, and in His actions, He is not burdened nor does He tire.”

  4. Al-Ghazali: He describes “Al-Matin” as indicative of Allah’s immense strength, characterizing Him as “the one with absolute capability” and “the one who is intensely strong.”

  5. Al-Baghawi: He notes that in the verse “ذُو الْقُوَّةِ الْمَتِينُ” (the Firm and Strong), it emphasizes Allah’s supreme power and ability.

  6. Al-Sa’di: He elaborates on “ذُو الْقُوَّةِ الْمَتِينُ,” explaining that it refers to Allah’s complete power and ability, the one who has created vast celestial and earthly bodies, governing both the seen and unseen. He enforces His will across all creation, stating that whatever Allah wills happens, and whatever He does not will does not occur. No one can escape His authority, and He is capable of providing sustenance to all creation. He also has the power to resurrect the dead after they have decayed and scattered, with nothing escaping His knowledge of them. He concludes with praise for Allah, the Firm and Strong
