    • “The case of the people of Pharaoh and those before them is similar; they rejected the signs of Allah, so Allah seized them for their sins. Indeed, Allah is Powerful and severe in punishment.”

Scholars’ Opinions on Its Meaning

  • Al-Tabari said: “Al-Qawi is the One who cannot be overcome by any overpowering force, and no one can thwart His decree. His command is executed and His judgment prevails among His creation. He is severe in punishment for those who reject His signs and deny His proofs.”

  • Ibn Kathir remarked: “He cannot be overpowered, nor can He be escaped from.”

  • Al-Khattabi stated: “He is the One whom incapacity does not affect in any circumstance. Although a creature may be described as strong, its strength is limited and deficient in certain matters.”

  • Ibn Uthaymeen, clarifying the difference between strength and ability, said: “Ability is the opposite of incapacity, while strength is the opposite of weakness. The difference between them is that ability applies to sentient beings, whereas strength can apply to sentient beings and non-sentient beings. Secondly, strength is more specific; every strong being with consciousness is able, but not every able being is strong.”

  • Ibn Al-Qayyim stated: “In His saying: ‘Indeed, Allah is the Provider, the Possessor of Strength, the Firm.’ (Surah Adh-Dhariyat 51:58), it is known that ‘the Strong’ is among His names and its meaning is: the One described with strength.” He also added:

    • “He is the Strong with all forms of strength, exalted is He, the Lord of the worlds and the times.”
